Guiding Scripture
“But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees saying, ‘Go away from me Lord for I am a sinful man.’” (Luke 5:8)
Key Points
Peter seems to always be the first to jump into a situation
Peter realizes he ungodly self-reliance and encounters his shame
In shame, we often push love, truth, and the reality of God’s presence away
Jesus looks past Peter’s shame and sees his goodness
Peter seems to be aware of his issues or maybe he becomes aware of them when Jesus is before him
It’s important to recall our first encounters with God
Jesus’ presence must be captivating to have stirred Peter enough to follow Him
There might be times that all we recognize is the shame and not the presence of Jesus that stirred it up
Jesus honours our freedom and decisions in the healing journey
Dynamics will surface and emerge as Jesus comes close to us
What will we do when Jesus is in our boat?
When we invite Jesus into a wound, we are asking for Him to reveal His presence to us and to speak truth and life into our hearts.
We have an important, ongoing decision to make. Will I keep my eyes on Jesus or look at the “waves” and interpret my life through their impact?
A basic way to grow in our relationship with Jesus is “eyes off me and eyes on Jesus.”
Practical Application
Where do you struggle with ungodly self-reliance?
When did Jesus first come into your life (boat)? Recall some of your initial encounters with Jesus. What had you forgotten?
Ask Jesus to show you how shame affects your relationship with Him.
What have you projected onto the Lord that prevents you from seeing Him clearly?
What will you do when Jesus is in your boat?
How would your life change if you believed that God is always up to something good?
